Free Standing Kitchen

Often, people like to brag about their integrated appliances, but one wonders if it’s really worth making that extra expenditure. The performance of freestanding appliances is surely as good and a bit more efficient, but they lack style.

In the present era, people care more for aesthetics and like to include that aspect in all spheres of life, even when designing their kitchens. Designing and layout of kitchen used to be a simple straightforward affair till the professionals came in to help us in its designing to make life easier for the cook at home, be it the wife or the husband. The professional designers help you to decide which cabinets, appliances, worktops and what kind of lighting will facilitate your working in the kitchen. Aesthetically speaking it would be nice to have integrated appliances that go unnoticed by casual glances, compared to the freestanding designs. However, aesthetics don’t come cheap!

There is little doubt that a kitchen devoid of any clutter looks terrific and integrated appliances, though costlier, help achieving that effect as appliances like fridges, washing machines, and tumble dryers get stored in matching cabinet doors. Ovens and hobs too prod out slyly from worktops and walls. Unlike the freestanding cooker, an integrated hob need not be openly on the oven. Nevertheless, the integrated appliances impose their own restrictions too. For example, you can’t reach at the back of your cooker or washing machine for keeping the area clean. Likewise, you won’t be able to replace the cabinets or even rearrange these unless you decide to get rid of the present ones and reinstall all the appliances. And, if by any chance the original layout went slightly wrong, you might have to live with it till you can afford to redo the entire thing again.

As already pointed out integrated appliances cost more than the freestanding counterparts. Though the capacity of an integrated washing machine is generally less than a freestanding machine, it costs slightly more. Similarly, integrated freezers are usually more costly. The manufacturers claim that the cost of producing these items is more because it becomes more difficult to add the cabinet door as also the technology concerned with the equipment.

Ultimately, the choice of having integrated appliances or the freestanding ones is decided in the battle of heart versus mind. You may want to have it, but the head says no! Considering the present state of economy, it may be worthwhile to economize and continue to bear the sight of freestanding appliances. On the other hand, if you can spare funds, by all means go ahead and please yourself with the integrated version of appliances.

These days kitchen racks are used more for their decorative feature than for storage. Quite a long time ago these were also known as bakers’ racks, but are now used for many rooms of the house. Some of these are designed to include wine racks while others have provision for drawers.

Originally, the bakers’ rack was used for cooling of baked goods but its use was not confined to commercial bakers alone as many women since the seventeenth century used these at home. The idea of using these racks was to have open shelving that was necessarily needed for hastening the process of cooling for all the homemade pies and like.

The kitchen rack is becoming all the rage today as it allows one to have scroll designs, and attractive metalwork to a kitchen that is more often than not used for cooking and baking only. These may be used in almost any room of the house to display collectibles or houseplants. Usually made of wood or metal these are designed to include shelves of wood, glass, or metal. Bakers racks made from stainless steel normally have shelves in glass, wood, or metal. They may have very simple design or could be very decorative to include delicate metalwork or very old scroll designs. Bakers’ racks and kitchen racks or made of wood also have open shelving design, which used to be popular long ago.

The most common design of bakers’ racks has a main shelf, usually wider than the rest of the selves as it was specified to be the working area for bakers. The rest of the 3 or 4 shelves would often have the same width and were typically used for hoarding baking paraphernalia. It was a practice with bakers to fix up these racks against or near a wall with an opening for window to facilitate cooling of the baked goods. You may consider using these to show houseplants, close to a sunny window located in any room apart from the kitchen. Certain designs of racks are not free standing on the floor and may be hung from the ceiling for being used as cookware and pot racks. Others are designed to get attached to the wall and used as dish racks or spice racks.

At times, skillfully decorated wrought iron bakers’ racks are used for displaying a desired collection in a dining room or family room. They could usefully be incorporated in a guest room or guest bathroom for keeping towels, soaps and such like products for overnight visitors. Rather than using a large sideboard it may be a good idea to use a free standing rack equipped with drawers or cabinet doors to store china, silverware, and serving pieces. Some are so designed to fit in a corner and won’t occupy a large area.

These decorative kitchen shelves prove to be versatile for baskets, small appliances, plants, and fresh cut flowers from the garden, kitchen towels, and cookbooks. Small racks or shelves can be mounted inside a cabinet door for keeping spices. Freestanding kitchen racks or bakers’ racks help adding an element of beauty to your kitchen, family room, dining room, and guest room and could prove to be quite handy in a home office.
